This is Gizmo in the Garden State Veterinary
Hospital in Tinton Falls, NJ.
Feel Helpless? I did too. This site was well overdue! The goal of this site is to accumulate data of all sick/deceased puppies sold by breeders and "puppy stores" in the Monmouth and Ocean counties of New Jersey and submit the results to the Department of Health.
My Story
Gizmo is my tiny toy poodle. He was born on June 6, 2009 and purchased from a PUPPY store in Brick NJ on September 4, 2009. In these pictures, he is 13 weeks old and weighs less than 2 pounds. To the upper right, you will see what he looked like the day we brought him home. To the left is a picture of him a day and a half later in the Garden State Veterinary Hospital. Notice the IV pump and the tubes running to his left paw. Truly heartbreaking. It turns out that Gizmo had kennel cough and mycoplasma that had progressed into pneumonia. The mycoplasma test alone (trachael wash) was $800. Vet bills have exceeded $4,000 and continue to accumulate.
From what I've been told by the vets, assistants, and volunteers at the ASPCA, Gizmo's case is not unusual. Many puppies are raised in "Puppy Mills" in terrible living conditions, shipped in bulk in unmarked box trucks of which many are not air conditioned, brokered by unscrupulous kennels and sold by well rehearsed, smooth talking PUPPY salespersons pretending to care but only interested in turning a buck.
"Oh", says the store manager, "you can always return the pup for a full refund". What will they do with the sick puppy? What do you think they're going to do with them? They are treated like spoiled food received at the supermarket......dispose of it and apply for a refund with the vendor! A cost of doing business! This is not acceptable.
In May of every year, the NJ Department of Health reviews the complaints against each PUPPY store. I would like to be in a position to present the findings of this registry, by store/breeder to them. Hopefully we can help them do their job and revoke the licenses of the offending sellers. Typically, stores buy from "puppy mills" (although they deny it and say that every "breeder" is USDA approved). If we can reduce the demand for these puppies, we can send a strong message to these mills that there is no longer any money to be made in this business. This; however, will take time.
PLEASE take the time to complete the information under "Data Form". Please be as complete as possible. I am doing this on my own time and out of my own pocket. God blessed me with a successful business and I want to "pay it forward". I'd like to make a difference and give these little guys a fighting chance.
